There are thousands of successful book illustrators these days due to the growing illustration industry. To name a few well known ones; Mick Inkpen, Quentin Blake, Jill Murphy, Karl James Mountford and Judith Kerr. These artists are all very differing in style and design but all have the same fundamental processes when it comes to creating their art. Judith Kerr, the illustrator of “Mog the Cat” and “The Tiger who came to Tea”, for example explained that when illustrating her books, she would focus on something that isn't in the text to add to the story, allowing children to understand what is happening better and give them a better visual aid. A lot of illustrators do this, especially children book illustrators, as they understand they have to tailor to the audience they are trying to cultivate.
Illustration is a very competitive field, as the majority of it is freelance and independent client work. It is also sometimes a stepping off point for some, allowing them to pivot into a different area of expertise such as animation or fine art. This blog will highlight the ins and outs of illustration, how it comes about and the processes behind it.
